What is a “Spirit Rock”?
A Spirit Rock is an exciting opportunity for you to share events with our school by painting your own message. This event might include your student’s birthday, events, competitions, recognizing milestones, etc. The Spirit Rock is a fun way to spread a positive message to your student and our school community.
What supplies do I need?
Plan on using 1-2 cans of spray paint for the base coat and then additional paint for the design. You will need to check out and return the PTO provided drop cloths to protect the ground from overspray and may also want to bring painters tape, scissors, templates, or brushes to aid in the design as well. Pleasemake sure that any nearby cars or school property will not be hit by overspray! Be aware that the Spirit Rock is near the BASE parking lot which will be in use every weekday evening.
ONLY the Rock may be painted. DO NOT paint the sidewalk or the landscape rocks or any other material surrounding the Rock. The individual or group will be held financially responsible for cleaning and/or repair costs associated with violation of this policy. Anyone painting the Rock must leave the area in clean condition. Remove all paint materials and litter from the site and be sure the paint is disposed of properly off-campus.
Painting TIPS:
Bring a gardening knee pad or cushion to support your knees while painting
Bring paper towels or wet wipes to keep your hands clean
The Rock is “bumpy”. A small paint brush/sponge will work best for detail work
A paper or plastic plate works well as a palette for paint
When spacing out your letters start with the middle letter and work your way out (spray paint doesdry quickly so you can always re-paint and re-do any words that may not fit)
Get low! Hold your spray paint can level with the part of the rock you are aiming at. This helps reduce overspray.
A 5in high letter stencil was used for the first design seen at the beginning of the year for “Welcome to Gold Rush” (as seen in pictures)

Please be kind to our environment and recycle empty paint cans, etc.
What can I reserve the rocks for?
You can reserve the rocks for anything!! A student’s birthday, thanking a teacher or staff member, congratulatory events, good luck on competitions and tournaments, recognizing milestones… The rock is a fun way to spread any kind of positive message. Please note that profanity, political, and business advertising messages are not permitted.Spirit Rock paintings MUST be in good taste. Gold Rush Staff and PTO will regularly monitor the Spirit Rock to ensure that paintings fall within the above-established guidelines. Gold Rush has the right to remove any painting deemed inappropriate by school administration without notice to those who painted the rock.
What if I reserve the rock and the weather is bad?
The rock can be towel dried and the paint will adhere even in the rain and or snow if you want to brave the elements. If painting in the rain or snow is not your thing, revisit the calendar and reserve the next available date and email goldrushpto@gmail.com to let us know of the date change. We can also attempt to move your reservation for you. Can the PTO paint the rock for me?The PTO is not responsible for painting the rock. You can find someone to paint it for you, but painting the rock is fun, and we are sure that no matter what you do, the person you are painting it for will love it!
